A very large ice-adapted seal, weighing up to 430 kg (948 lbs.), the bearded seal lives about 20 years. They feed mainly on clams, shrimp, crabs and other invertebrates. Beareded seals generally prefer broken pack ice and shallow open water areas away from fast ice for habitat.
###Importance Bearded seals are an important food source for polar bears. They are also harvested by Inuit, supplying food and a range of clothing and tools.
###Potential impact of an oil spill Direct contact with oil on ice or land, or when oil suspended in the water – especially for mothers suckling young – can affect the seals’ health, particularly by irritating mucous membranes and eyes. They can also inhale hydrocarbon vapours, affecting their ability to breathe. Bearded seals may also ingest contaminated food, leading to kidney malfunction and chronic health issues, sometimes fatally.
