Trans-Alaska Pipeline

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System was designed and constructed to move oil from the North Slope of Alaska – including a number of lease areas in the U.S. Beaufort Sea – to Alaska’s northern most ice-free port in Valdez. The pipeline is 800 miles long (1,287 km), and has transported almost 17 billion barrels of oil since it was completed in 1977.

###Importance The pipeline crosses three mountain ranges, more than 30 major rivers and streams, and essential habitat for the Porcupine Caribou Herd within the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve.
